A Cell is like a House


1. The Cell Wall of a house would be it's bricks.
Function- The cell wall protects the cell and provides the cell with support. The bricks protect the house from the elements, (Ex.storms,winds,floods etc.).
NOTE- Cell Walls are only found in plants.

2. The Plasma Membrane of the house would be its security system.
Function- The Plasma Membrane is the gatekeeper, the one who controls who enters and leaves the cell. The security system monitors who enters and leaves the house.

3. The Nucleus of a house would be it's owner.
Function- The nucleus controls the functions and is the keeper of hereditary material (DNA) in the cell. The owner controls the house. For example, the owner controls the electricity, water, and heat of the house.

4. The Cytoskeleton of the house would be it's hallways.
Function- The Cytoskeleton helps the cell maintain its shape and is involved in inner cell movement. The hallways support the house and are the means of movment within the house.

5. The Mitochondrion of the house would be the fuse box.
Function- The mitochondrion converts food energy into ATP which is used for cellular respiration. The fuse box supplies energy or (electricity) to all parts of the house.

6. The Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) of the house would be the beds.
Function- The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) modifies proteins and synthesizes lipids. The beds take the house's residents when they are tired, and modifies or changes them by allowing for rest.

7. The Golgi Apparatus of the house would be the front door.
Function- The golgi apparatus is the final preparation point of proteins before they are exported from the cell. The front door is the final point before the resident exits the house.

8. The Lysosomes of the house would be it's housekeeper.
Function- The lysosomes breaks down macromolecules and old cell parts. The housekeeper cleans up the dirt, takes out the trash, and keeps the house tidy.

9. The Vacuole of the house would be the kitchen pantry.
Function the vacuole stores salts, water, proteins, and carbohydrates for the cell to use. The kitchen pantry stores food for the house's dwellers to use.

10. The Ribosomes of the house would be the kitchen.
Function- The ribosomes assemble amino acids into protein. But, the bound ribosomes produce proteins to be exported from the cell to other parts of the cell. The kitchen is where the food gets prepared, and in many cases consumed, within the house.

11. The Chloroplast of the house would be the lamps.
Function- The chloroplast converts light energy from the sun into glucose. The lamps convert electricity into light allowing for better sight.
